Prophase I of Meiosis

Prophase I is the longest period in meiosis.  During this phase tetrads are produced.  Homologous chromosomes pair, recombine and exchange genetic material in prophase I.  This process greatly expands the combinations of genes possible in the progeny.  Remember that the process of meiosis reduces the amount of genetic material as a necessary prelude to sexual reproduction.
